The Miami 2 NYC challenge is an endeavor of Jim Brassord, a friend of the late John P. Musante. On or around May 1, 2017, Jim will embark on an epic 1,400 mile single-handed row along the historic Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) in support of the Campaign for the John P. Musante Health Center (JPMHC).
The row is not his challenge. His challenge is to secure critical funds to complete the vision that John P. Musante started - an affordable and accessible health care center..
For many, the ICW is a difficult and confusing place to navigate, not unlike our health care system. For power boaters and sailors, the ICW is manageable if you can read a chart and have good judgement. But Jim is not power boating or sailing, he is rowing, and he will not only need the ability to read a chart and have good judgement, he will need fitness, a well equipped boat, skill, and whole lot of grit.
He will complete his journey in an 18' Little River Heritage rowing shell using nothing but his own human power. He will be completely self-sufficient. No chase boat. No 24-7 support team. He will sleep primarily in his boat or in a tent on land nearby. He will go nonstop unless weather prevents him from doing so safely. He will pack and prepare most of his food unless some kind person gives him food or he finds places to stop where he can re-provision and rest.
You can follow Jim's progress through his regular Miami 2 NYC blog postings, including updates on his training and preparations leading up to his launch. While underway, a GPS tracker will let you know where he is at any given time by visiting his Follow page.
